October 7th is Karwa Chauth in India, a festival celebrated by married women for the well being and signifies extreme love and devotion to the husband. The women fast for a full one whole day, don’t even drink water, to signify the length of suffering they are prepared to go for their spouse’s well being and long life.

Karwa Chauth is derived from two words, Karwa and Chauth. Karwa means a clay pot and Chauth means the fourth night after a full moon or a new moon. In this instance it means the fourth day after the full moon in the month of Kartik, based on the hindu calendar system.

The fasting, which is considered of real importance amongst the married women of India, begins with the moon rise on the third night after the full moon of Kartik month. This fasting is started in the presence of the husband and the women do not partake of any food or drink until the next moon rise.

On the fourth night after the full moon of the Kartik month, the women wait eagerly for the moon to rise. They wear their best clothing and jewelery, which is mostly provided by the parents or siblings of the wife. As soon as the moon is visible the festivities begin and the fast is broken by the wife.

The wife first prays to the moon and seeks blessings and then looks towards the moon though a “Channi”, sieve. The wife then looks at the husband through the sieve and the husband offers the wife with some sweet or any other food to break her fast. The wife then touches the husbands feet and seeks blessings from him that she will be her wife forever and ever, in this life and other lives to come.

Desperately, helplessly, longingly, I cried;
Quietly, patiently, lovingly God replied.
I plead and I wept for a clue to my fate
And the Master so gently said, “Wait.”

“Wait? You say wait?”, my indignant reply.
“Lord, I need answers, I need to know why!”
Is Your hand shortened? Or have You not heard?
By faith I have asked, and I’m claiming your Word.

My future and all to which I relate,
Hangs in the balance, and You tell me to wait?
I’m needing a ‘yes’, a ‘ go-ahead’ sign.
Or even a ‘ no’ to which I’ll resign.

You promised, dear Lord, that if we believe,
We need to but ask, and we shall receive.
Lord, I’ve been asking, and this is my cry:
I’m weary of asking! I need a reply.

Then quietly, softly, I learned of my fate,
As my Master replied again, “Wait.”
So I slumped in my chair, defeated and taut,
And grumbled to God, “So I’m waiting. For what?”

He seemed then to kneel, and His eyes met with mine.
And He tenderly said “I could give you a sign.”
I could shake the heavens and darken the sun.
I could raise the dead and cause the mountains to run.

I could give you all you seek and pleased you would be.
You’d have what you want, but you wouldn’t know Me.
You’d not know the depth of My love for each saint.
You’d not know the power that I give to the faint.

You’d not learn to see through the clouds of despair;
You’d not learn to trust just by knowing I’m there.
You’d not know the joy of resting in Me,
When darkness and silence are all you can see.

You’d never experience the fullness of love,
When the peace of My spirit descends like a dove.
You would know that I give, and I save, for a start,
But you’d not know the depth of the beat of My heart.

The glow of My comfort late into the night,
The faith that I give when you walk without sight.
The depth that’s beyond just getting what you ask,
From an infinite God who makes what you have last.

You’d never know should your pain quickly flee,
Wait. It means that My grace is sufficient for thee.
Yes, your dearest dreams overnight would come true,
But oh, what a loss, if I lost what I’m doing in you.

So, be silent, My child, and in time you will see,
That the greatest of gifts is to truly know Me.
And though often My answers seem terribly late,
My most precious answer of all is still “WAIT”

Yes, I am still waiting.
But wish to know the period of “WAIT”

However bridge building experts throughout the world thought that this was an impossible feat and told Roebling to forget the idea. It just could not be done. It was not practical. It had never been done before.

Roebling could not ignore the vision he had in his mind of this bridge. He thought about it all the time and he knew deep in his heart that it could be done. He just had to share the dream with someone else. After much discussion and persuasion he managed to convince his son Washington, an up and coming engineer, that the bridge in fact could be built.

Working together for the first time, the father and son developed concepts of how it could be accomplished and how the obstacles could be overcome. With great excitement and inspiration, and the headiness of a wild challenge before them, they hired their crew and began to build their dream bridge.

The project started well, but when it was only a few months underway a tragic accident on the site took the life of John Roebling. Washington was injured and left with a certain amount of brain damage, which resulted in him not being able to walk or talk or even move.

“We told them so.”
“Crazy men and their crazy dreams.”
“It’s foolish to chase wild visions.”

Everyone had a negative comment to make and felt that the project should be scrapped since the Roeblings were the only ones who knew how the bridge could be built. In spite of his handicap Washington was never discouraged and still had a burning desire to complete the bridge and his mind was still as sharp as ever.

He tried to inspire and pass on his enthusiasm to some of his friends, but they were too daunted by the task. As he lay on his bed in his hospital room, with the sunlight streaming through the windows, a gentle breeze blew the flimsy white curtains apart and he was able to see the sky and the tops of the trees outside for just a moment.

It seemed that there was a message for him not to give up. Suddenly an idea hit him. All he could do was move one finger and he decided to make the best use of it. By moving this, he slowly developed a code of communication with his wife.

He touched his wife’s arm with that finger, indicating to her that he wanted her to call the engineers again. Then he used the same method of tapping her arm to tell the engineers what to do. It seemed foolish but the project was under way again.

For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on his wife’s arm, until the bridge was finally completed. Today the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory as a tribute to the triumph of one man’s indomitable spirit and his determination not to be defeated by circumstances. It is also a tribute to the engineers and their team work, and to their faith in a man who was considered mad by half the world. It stands too as a tangible monument to the love and devotion of his wife who for 13 long years patiently decoded the messages of her husband and told the engineers what to do.

Perhaps this is one of the best examples of a never-say-die attitude that overcomes a terrible physical handicap and achieves an impossible goal.

Often when we face obstacles in our day-to-day life, our hurdles seem very small in comparison to what many others have to face. The Brooklyn Bridge shows us that dreams that seem impossible can be realized with determination and persistence, no matter what the odds are.

Even the most distant dream can be realized with determination and persistence.

“That’s my son over there,” she said, pointing to a little boy in a red sweater who was gliding down the slide.

“He’s a fine looking boy” the man said. “That’s my daughter on the bike in the white dress.”

Then, looking at his watch, he called to his daughter. “What do you say we go, Melissa?”

Melissa pleaded, “Just five more minutes, Dad. Please? Just five more minutes.”

The man nodded and Melissa continued to ride her bike to her heart’s content. Minutes passed and the father stood and called again to his daughter. “Time to go now?”

Again Melissa pleaded, “Five more minutes, Dad. Just five more minutes.”

The man smiled and said, “OK.”

“My, you certainly are a patient father,” the woman responded.

The man smiled and then said, “Her older brother Tommy was killed by a drunk driver last year while he was riding his bike near here. I never spent much time with Tommy and now I’d give anything for just five more minutes with him. I’ve vowed not to make the same mistake with Melissa.

She thinks she has five more minutes to ride her bike. The truth is, I get Five more minutes to watch her play.”

Life is all about making priorities, what are your priorities?

Give someone you love five more minutes of your time today!

Three years, five months
We were engaged
Even if I was young
For the future we could wait

So many times we lost our place
But it’s hard to be together
When we’re miles away
So maybe it was fate

And got on my knees
Making sure God listened
That I needed you next to me

Today I still love you
More than I ever did
But I guess the love you had
For me took a scary twist

I guess you found another
That is near you
It hurts because you didn’t say Goodbye
But I remember..
The last words you said were..

I Love You
